The Power of Strategic Thinking is the third and final book in the strategic thinking trilogy. It is focused on the practical application of strategic thinking in today’s world and demonstrates why it is so powerful and necessary to help us transform the many challenges that currently face us. The book’s title comes from my belief that learning to see the whole and work with it - rather than against it - provides us with unique opportunities, many of which are currently hidden from us because of our limited perception of the world.
Since I wrote The Strategic Mind I have also become acutely aware of just how hard it is for many people to grasp the concept of strategic thinking. So, with that in mind, The Power of Strategic Thinking takes us through the process step by step, backed with a multitude of practical stories and examples, extending the previous two books and always focusing on the practical dimension. We can all make a very big difference and this book is dedicated to showing us how.
This, the first book on strategic thinking, was written in response to a world in crisis. One that requires a profound shift in the way that we think. The Strategic Mind provides a framework for developing a deeper, more holistic form of thinking using seven timeless disciplines: know your own story; think small; serve others; reflect; be simple; and, dream.
Learning to think strategically - and literally see the big picture - is anything but easy so the Strategic Mind is packed with practical stories and examples from all sectors of economic activity, from the very large (Amazon, Apple, the National Trust) to the small and very personal. I hope that it provides both theoretical insights and practical guidance to build sustainable business and personal strategies for the 21st Century.
Learning to think strategically and see the whole picture is vital if we are going to transcend the massive challenges that confront our world today. But it is only half the story. We also need to learn develop the capacity to act, to make a difference in this world through our practical actions. For me, this is the very definition of leadership.
The Mantle of Strategic Leadership, the second book in the strategic thinking series, traces the journey to becoming a strategic leader - one who can really make a difference - by extending the seven timeless disciplines of strategic thinking: taking responsibility; seeing the whole; we not me; travelling light; going with the flow; an inside job; and, wake me up. Again, as stories are our best teachers, the book is packed with examples from Apple, Waitrose and HRH The Prince of Wales to leaders in civic society, social entrepreneurs and community-based concerns
Like many authors, I am often asked to write articles for various magazines, people and reasons. Not all stand up to the scrutiny of a public forum or are still relevant in a contemporary context. Some, I am very happy to never let see the light of day! However, there are a few that I do think are still worth reading.
In early 2011 I was preparing my launch presentation for The Mantle of Strategic Leadership at the Pierian Centre in Bristol. I put together a limited edition author’s cut, taken from the stories and sections of the book that were cut by my editor. For some reason it is often more fascinating to see what is cut from a book then to read what is left in! So, you will find the author’s cut for my books by following the link here.
My first published book on strategy - a thinking person’s guide to strategy. It was co-written with my good friend, John Middleton, after my first book, Strategy From the Heart, was pulled from the publisher’s list at the very last minute. These are the calls that you never want to take!
For reasons that I do not understand John’s name seems to have fallen off the cover but he still very much deserves the credit for his part in the process. Not least for persuading a broken-hearted budding writer to pursue his dreams!
Writing isn’t just a job that stops at six thirty... It’s a mad, sexy, sad, scary, ruthless, joyful, and utterly, utterly, personal thing.
